Some people were told by Cayce to cleanse their system using a teaspoon of ENO salts in water every morning for a period of time. This is a simple thing to do, and not unpleasant. In fact ENO salt is still very popular in India and readily bought on Amazon.
But in 1943 Cayce told a woman that ENO salts no longer had as much magnesium and now weren’t as good as Upjohn’s Citrocarbonate (now discontinued).
Indeed a 1949 ad for ENO salts says it contains no epsom salt, though in the 19th century when ENO and other fruit salts were introduced, epsom salts
were a common ingredient.
Citrocarbonate (at least in later years) was about 2% epsom salt by weight. It also contained tartaric as well as citric acid (ENO salts today
only have citric acid). Both citric acid and tartaric acid become alkaline in the body (but acetic acid, i.e., vinegar, does not!).
A 1923 ad shows a package of ENO that seems to read “containing about 48% fruit extract” and “about 52% alkaline salt”.
Today it is said to be 46% baking soda, 44% (anhydrous) citric acid, 10% sodium carbonate. Citrocarbonate was made only with bicarbonate ions.
Citric acid is pretty easy to buy (NOW brand sells it). Same with tartaric acid (cream of tartar), epsom salt, and baking soda.
Measuring out 2% epsom salt maybe not easy unless you have a suitable scale. Too much epsom salt could create too much of
a laxative effect, but the usual dose is 2-6 teaspoons per day as a laxative, so it’s pretty safe, and perhaps estimating a sixth of 1/8 tsp is close enough.
I would think roughly half and half of citric acid (possibly with cream of tartar) and baking soda is close enough. If it tastes overly sour add more
baking soda (but too much would make it salty). In some cases Cayce advised to mix with just a small amount of water so the glass wouldn’t
fizz over. Then add more water. He also said to let it fizz completely and drink as soon as the fizzing stops.
Here’s a reading excerpt:
“Of course, keep the eliminations. Even for this condition, there is nothing better than the ENO SALTS taken regularly, a teaspoonful each morning in a full glass of water, before the meal is taken, for ten days; then leave off two or three days, then take again, and so on. This will keep down these conditions. But supply those energies needed through the meals, – those foods that aid in giving sufficient energies, so that it will not be necessary to keep up the Eno Salts indefinitely. This is a fruit salts, you see, and is not straining on the system as the mineral salts would be.” 1224-5
(others were told a heaped teaspoon).
